2 INDEX ORGANIZATION Most index users that I have observed plunge directly into the alphabetical lists looking for information. Introductory information is rarely consulted initially and usually subsequently only when the lists themselves are found confusing or highly symbolic. I have designed these indexes with such hasty users in mind. RECORD FORMAT: Each citation in either the taxa or the geographical locality index presents a complete record in the general form: [TAXA index] taxon : exsiccate : locality [or, GEOGRAPHICAL index] locality : exsiccate : taxon A colon has been used to partition the information in each record. ABBREVIATIONS: Abbreviations are absent from these indexes except for the exsiccate (see pp. 4-8), standard bibliographic or nomenclatural abbreviations, and the names of three countries, which are long and frequently occurring: FRG Federal Republic of Germany GDR German Democratic Republic US United States of America TAXA ENTRIES In the taxa index taxa are listed by species name, followed by the generic name (in parentheses), the species' author's name, the varietal name, the varietal author's name, the form name and the form's author's name, e.g., camelus (Eunotia) Ehrenberg v. didymodon Grunow. In the geographical locality index the generic and specific names are reversed, and the parentheses are omitted, e.g., Eunotia camelus Ehrenberg v. didymodon Grunow. GEOGRAPHICAL LOCALITY ENTRIES: Geographical localities are presented in a simple, three-tiered, hierarchical arrangement: locality (province) country. For example, Falaise (Calvados) France. In nearly all cases provinces correspond to the major political subdivisions of a country, e.g., departments, states, län, etc. Oceanic locations have been treated in an analogous manner. Specimens which could not be associated with any locality are listed under the "No locality." ALPHABETIZATION: Alphabetization of the record lists is also hierarchical; it has proceeded from the entry in the innermost set of parentheses sequentially to that entry in the outermost set: TAXA index: ((((((species) genus) variety) species author) variety author) exsiccate name) exsiccate number) locality). GEOGRAPHICAL index: (((((((locality) province) country) exsiccate name) exsiccate number) genus) species) variety) species author) variety author) In the taxa index the names of forms are alphabetized as if they were varietal names beginning with "f.". In taxa and geographical locality indexes only Van Heurck's exsiccate have been alphabetized beginning with "Van", and H.L. Smith's exsiccate have been alphabetized beginning with "H.L." HIERARCHICAL SUMMARIES: In both indexes the names of more-inclusive sets in the Classification hierarchies (genera or countries/provinces) have been incorporated into the alphabetical listings and followed by an inventory of all subsets (species or provinces/localities, respectively), culled from the exsiccate, falling within them.
