The hill sides were brown with grass but no stock was visible to crop the herbage. The Jap saddle used is a modification of the Chinese & has two large wooden ribs which on which the goods are fastened of side by balance. Just before dark at 5:45 we passed thru the city of Kaijo a sea of small thatched huts, many of them roofed brilliant red with drying peppers. The ginseng is cultivated & some beds were seen covered by straw deltas to protect the precious plants. At 7:38 we reached Seoul & Lewis driven in a motor to the chosen hotel by Japanese attendants who were exceedingly polite & efficient.
