The lamas all wore long red robes, the large yellow robes. The faces were often distinctly Chinese with narrow eyes + not the heavy features of the Tibetan. The characters on the temples were Chinese, not Tibetan. There are 100 monks here supported by the gark, but under the Republic this support is decreasing. I had some difficulty in getting the guide Pei to show me to the feet of a bound footed woman. The only ones which will permit their feet to be seen are prostitutes. The ones we saw were two simple squeezed vespasians + a small with the large toe and a sharp point, for in advance the others. While the toes had not been bent down & turned under as I had been led to believe.
