Leaving Wei hai wei at 7 P.M. We steamed up to the coast to Chee fu where we dropped anchor four hours later at 1-11 A.M. The eastern side of the entrance is protected by a long line of low yellow rocky hills, of which extend for out into the blue sea & are continued at their tip by a further small yellow island of linear shape. The Captain showed us of a Japanese steamer which went ashore on this point in a heavy snow storm last winter. The boat mistook one of the gaps in the shaggy port for the entrance & ran straight ashore where the surface dashed over the North ice, A whole cluster of Chinese Passengers who had climbed up the mast to save themselves were there frozen stiff with. A black block is a relief.
