96 J. HAYDOCK MELANERPEs FORMICIVORUS HAY-BLOM HNHR 2 APRIL 1:25- No birds seen at upper tree (above fence). No acorns in upper tree. 10 April 1:45- No bird seen in upper tree hole. 12 Apr. 9:10- Started Obs. to see if UNB ≠ is present. 9:50- Ended Obs. Nobody seen. Checked acorns - Basically none - only shells, but possibly a few (veryfew) good acorns. 19April 13:00- checked holes - Nobody seen. 14:00 - Placed 2 Feeders in main granary tree. (Refute 1 is paired control group - non supplemented) 13 MAY 8:00- Power struggle going on. Set mist net to try to catch some of them. 4:00 Caught 2 birds thus far - # 2529 from knoll and # 2218 from Wgate) Also saw: 2 split bands with light green and white dash abr D blue / m (IF 2348- she was in incubator at CIX power struggle 14 MAY. 4:30- Arrived to help Walt with ambush. At least one bird in hole but cavity is too big and deep (at least 3 feet deep) to reach bottom. So we wait for birds to come out into nest box - And wait - Bird comes out! - but goes back in hole as soon as we approach. Walt set Ambush back to close hole after bird comes out - AV's back - We give up after 4½ hrs. (Note: Ambush was set to try to catch B's copulating, so that mate guarding observation can be done.
