96 HAYDOCK 97 MELANERPEs FORMICIVORUS CV2 HNHR August 12 7:15 - No live birds seen, but see wing feathers of a woodpecker in this years nest hole. It looks dead. No new acorns in granary, but they still have a few old acorns. Walt climbs tree and finds 3 dead, dried up babies. It does not look like they grew much after banding, so they died well before fledging [Orange - Dgreen - Dgreen Orange] (see Walt's notes for identities) * 1997 * April 3 Checked nest cavities - No body seen in a hole 15 April Checked holes - nobody seen. 18 April 17:00. Bird in hole - 7 eggs, including 1 rantegy. Complete ?? 20 April 12:45 - Bird in hole - Still 7 eggs, so it was complete. ① 23.9 x 18.4 ② 24.4 x 18.6 ③ 24.9 x 18.6 ④ 24.7 x 18.9 ⑤ 24.1 x 18.9 ⑥ 24.8 x 19.0 ⑦ 21.0 x 17.0 28 April 10:00 - 3 babies, 4 eggs. 3 babies hatched today. 1 MAY 10:00 5 babies - 2 eggs. Took the eggs (included the rant egg and one normal egg.) 20 MAY Banded 4 healthy babies. 19 June 9:15 - No birds seen in any hole; lots of acorns remaining.
