97 J. MAYDOCK MELANERPE S FORMICIVORUS GAZEBO HNHR April 3 9:10 - Bird flew from near nest hole of previous years. - 14 April 11:15 - Still 7 eggs. Bird in hole when I arrived 20 April 1:30 - 6 babies now, no eggs remaining 4.5g - 11g. 4.5g nestling does not look too good. Likely that 7 egg hatched and [illegible] baby died. 7 MAY 15:00 - Banded and bled 5 healthy babies. #2782-2786 11 June 15:30 - 2 babies hatched today. 4 eggs - all look fertile. (1) 24.6 x 19.3. (2) 24.1 x 19.4 16 June 9:30 - Bird in hole. I can hear the one remaining baby. 22 June 16:40 - Nest failed - One dead baby in hole - died w/in the last day or so, for no apparent reason. took tissue from dead baby #2902 5 July 8:40. Bird in hole; traditional hole. Checked at 9:30. Found 6 fresh eggs 18 July 7:00. 5 babies: Largest 14g. (3 about this size + 2 smaller ~5g that probably will not make it) Acorns remaining. 4 August 16:00 - Banded and bled 3 babies w/ Erin. They are small for their age (20 d old now) and there is a big difference in size between the largest and smallest (70-4g) but they look relatively well fed, especially compared to nestlings in other late (summer) nests. Some acorns still remaining. #2951-2953 23 August 10:00 - Found fledgling on ground - too weak to fly. #2953. Can see another baby that is still in nest hole. They are very late to fledge. - Acorns remaining.
