5 Rattus n., 3 Melomys, 1 Parahydromys. Bought a good specimen of
Anisomys; also Rattus ruber. Tobram doing well at skinning - slow
but careful. Lik Lik ill today. Spelled him at 3 p.m. Hetana took
over + skinned. Another snake and several batches of frogs for
tobacco - now over the 1000 mark! Some very good species of frogs.
Bought a Pseudocheirus cupreus just before dinner (5/6). Ed Colling
brought bread from Goroka. John gave me a haircut. We see bats
each evening but have shot none yet. Good frog chorus tonight. We
are sleeping warm + my bed is very comfortable. Creamed tripe - dinner.
Fair + Pleasant, Night clear. 7 FRIDAY 249-146 Mt. Otto, Sawmill.
Another Parahydromys, our first Antechinus melanurus for Otto, + 1
Rattus n. The usual before dinner "market" brought in our first native
cat of the trip, + our first "Kermani" (bandicoot) for Otto. Also shot a
Pipistrelle near the mill. This p.m. John, Tobram + I walked up
stream to junction of creeks + on up for 1/4 mile to large Boulder
cave (perhaps 75' in all). Great heaps of bat dung but not a bat to
be found. The local Kotunis had visited the cave recently and had
cleaned up - a great disappointment. Collected a few cave insects.
Beautiful boulder stream. Electricity on @ house. Bats chasing
insects in front of porch light. Will rig up shades for shooting. John
+ Tobram out tracking,
149-99
Cloudy. Torrential rain in p.m. 8 SATURDAY 220-145 Mt. Otto - Sawmill.
Another flood of frogs today - a fine variety of species. We will have
to call a halt soon! We are up to #1374. Only a Melomys + Rattus in
traps. Bought an Exulans + 2 young; tonight a Hydromys - skull
battered in, unfortunately - took blood sample. Shot a Pipistrelle;
collected 2 large ectos. John + Fred off to Goroka for the
weekend. Valve on water main broke - no electric lights tonight.
Len + I are used to the Coleman + like it. Stars out. No jacking.
Mostly cloudy, Shower p.m. 9 SUNDAY 221-144 Mt. Otto - Sawmill.
New traplines a disappointment - only Rattus + Melomys. John + Fred returned p.m.
+ Fixed Generator. Tried to shoot bat by front light - no luck. Tobram + I
walked almost to race for dust batting - no luck. Hagens brought in Anisomys.
Cataloged 36 frogs. Rod told John about 2 more caves up + across creek.
Len has asked John to climb Otto with flower-flower boys to collect.
