31 Days AUGUST 1959 8th Month Choudy, little sun, Rain at NIGHT. 147-101 Mt. Otto, Sawmill 6 THURSDAY 248-147 5 Rattus n., 3 Melomys, 1 Parahydromys. Bought a good specimen of Anisomys; also Rattus ruber. Tobram doing well at skinning - slow but careful. Lik Lik ill today. Spelled him at 3 p.m. Hetana took over + skinned. Another snake and several batches of frogs for tobacco - now over the 1000 mark! Some very good species of frogs. Bought a Pseudocheirus cupreus just before dinner (5/6). Ed Colling brought bread from Goroka. John gave me a haircut. We see bats each evening but have shot none yet. Good frog chorus tonight. We are sleeping warm + my bed is very comfortable. Creamed tripe - dinner. Fair + Pleasant, Night clear. 7 FRIDAY 249-146 Mt. Otto, Sawmill. Another Parahydromys, our first Antechinus melanurus for Otto, + 1 Rattus n. The usual before dinner "market" brought in our first native cat of the trip, + our first "Kermani" (bandicoot) for Otto. Also shot a Pipistrelle near the mill. This p.m. John, Tobram + I walked up stream to junction of creeks + on up for 1/4 mile to large Boulder cave (perhaps 75' in all). Great heaps of bat dung but not a bat to be found. The local Kotunis had visited the cave recently and had cleaned up - a great disappointment. Collected a few cave insects. Beautiful boulder stream. Electricity on @ house. Bats chasing insects in front of porch light. Will rig up shades for shooting. John + Tobram out tracking, 149-99 Cloudy. Torrential rain in p.m. 8 SATURDAY 220-145 Mt. Otto - Sawmill. Another flood of frogs today - a fine variety of species. We will have to call a halt soon! We are up to #1374. Only a Melomys + Rattus in traps. Bought an Exulans + 2 young; tonight a Hydromys - skull battered in, unfortunately - took blood sample. Shot a Pipistrelle; collected 2 large ectos. John + Fred off to Goroka for the weekend. Valve on water main broke - no electric lights tonight. Len + I are used to the Coleman + like it. Stars out. No jacking. Mostly cloudy, Shower p.m. 9 SUNDAY 221-144 Mt. Otto - Sawmill. New traplines a disappointment - only Rattus + Melomys. John + Fred returned p.m. + Fixed Generator. Tried to shoot bat by front light - no luck. Tobram + I walked almost to race for dust batting - no luck. Hagens brought in Anisomys. Cataloged 36 frogs. Rod told John about 2 more caves up + across creek. Len has asked John to climb Otto with flower-flower boys to collect.
