30 Days JUNE 1959 6th Month DISTANCE. 18 THURSDAY 169-196 (98) MT. WILHELM, LAKE AUNDE BEAUTIFUL DAY. FEW CUMULUS IN Today I climbed Mt. Wilhelm. Up at 6:30. Quick breakfast. Off alone at 7:20 so I could set my own pace. John, 3 Chimbus, caught me up on Slope above Lake Pinde, Arrived North Peak (True Summit) at 12:10 P.M. Stayed in warm sun until 2: P.M. Many pictures. Flew Explorers Club flag. Found another flag on pole [illegible] WHITE RED. Church flag? Copied all notes found in jars. Mt. Giluwe visible in Papua. Collected bag of plants for Len, mostly on summit ridge, Peak #2 (South) almost as high. John climbed it in 10 minutes on way to camp. Home about 6: P.M. Felt tired but very fit. LEN PASSED 30,000 PLANT NUMBERS TODAY! SMALL BOY BROUGHT IN PSEUDOHYDROMYS Some sun; overcast. 19 FRIDAY 170-195 (99) MT. WILHELM, LAKE AUNDE Busy day trying to catch up from my Holiday. Mammals came in at odd hours all day. Rather hectic. The prize was what I believe to be the 2nd specimen of NEOHYDROMYS, Silver gray, larger skull than PSEUDOHYDROMYS, not as flat. Very shrew-like. Musky odor. Hope we catch a few at our lower camp. Saved bodies in formalin. Today we would have cloud part of time on mountain. We were very lucky! John did the climb twice in 3 days! To Bram, War's brother, was a great help yesterday Moth lamp above camp. 2 species. Demkana Saw-pit man, + chap with bump on forehead were our other companions. Put out Clouds in camp all day. Shower) 20 SATURDAY 171-194 (100) MT. WILHELM, LAKE AUNDE Worked intent all day. Kim 3 Rattus in 15 rat, 5 M.Sp.; Likliko in 10 M.Sp. War 1 Bandicoot; 1 PSEUDOCHIURUS in 14 steel. Boys brought in 2 sp. Melomys, Pogonomelomys. Caught up on my backlog of skins to be made up. Hetana out today. Sharp shower, just before dinner, came thru our grass roof which had dried out during our dry spell. A fly soon fixed it. Kim made fine Shepherds pie. Delicious crust. Len took flash pictures in hut. 1. Found 2 rare Cloud in A.M. Rain in P.M. 21 SUNDAY 172-193 (101) MT. WILHELM, LAKE AUNDE. A hectic day. Boys brought in 30 odd mammals, including a 2nd NEOHYDROMYS LORENTZIMYS, 5 ANTECHINUS, WHITE-BELLIED + GRAY-BELLIED POGONOMELMYS, 2 species of MELOMYS, + POGONOMELMYS. Only 4 Rattus in our traps. Took advantage of wet day to put small boys on to catching frogs in humus, 65 turned up! Pay at first in silver, then tobacco & salt. Len worked on Mt. N. climbing records. DEMKANA, TEACHER, TOBRAM
