5th Month MAY 1959 31 Days Mostly Fair. 25 MONDAY 145-220 (74) Kaindi Ran our trap line on the Slate. Nothing but a water bird. Set 2 live traps under fruiting tree that John found a week ago. Set 4 rats in Sila Sila tree. 1 R. niobe in traps. At 11:30 Horrie's boys showed up with 1 Doreopsulus, 3 ring-tails, +1 giant Hyomys! Every body pitched in and we soon had the lot measured, weighed + skinned, All a bit high. Did not finish making up until after supper. Hyomys is largest I have seen - 32 in.! John + Richard walked 2-3 mi. out on Bulldog Tract. No luck jacking. Traps: Slate Cr. 9 steel, 14 rat, 4 rat (tree), 2 live, Kaindi: Hetana - 20 rat. Early cloud. Pleasant day. ette 26 TUESDAY 146-219 (75) Kaindi Last night warmest in days. Went to Slate Cr., + a real prize - Para Hydromys! First one I have ever seen. Took care in skin- ing + making it up. Saved body. Horrie's boy brought down shull of tree climbing Kangaroo. Boys left it on porch + dogs ruined it - then boys ate it! Out in P.M. to look in old gold mine drives for bats. Nothing but small Miniopterus. Waited aternals of Watut + Bulldo trails until dusk + then hacked home. No luck. Kim had birthday dinner + cake for Len. Excellent! Fair. 27 WEDNESDAY 147-218 (76) Kaindi: Len's 59th Birthday John left with Richard to meet Zenag truck at Bulolo. Home + took boys to pick up 19 rat traps, 7 steels, 2 live along the Slate Creek. A real prize! Peroryctes longicaudata ornata - a beautiful dandicoort with broad black stripe down back, 2- black stripes on rump + 1 on back of rear legs. Spent P.M. unpinning specimens; making up wood swallow, pickling birds. Bob Franklin dropped in with a friend for a drink before going dinner + stayed for a birthday supper. Very fine evening, I wrapped + packed all my mammals. 23 species for the camp, 4 from Bulolo, 1 Wru = 27; 124 specimens in all. No traps out tonight. Len had a most pleasant birthday + enjoyed Talking about Woodlarn Is, with Frank Brandon. To bed tired.
