9th Month SEPTEMBER 1959 30 Days Russ had Mr. + Mrs. Pollard of LAE as house guests: Fair. Heavy cumulus 14 MONDAY 257-108 Up early to shoot - saw no bats. After breakfast I offered the small boys 5 sticks of Tobacco to find our Otomops. They took the area apart - but no luck. It really hurts to lose a rare specimen like that! Broke camp in late A.M., lunched & left at 12'55. Road excellent. Collected an orchid in grass- land. Just 40 miles to Goroka. Crossed Kami River on a shakey suspension bridge that rippled. Mt. Michael in clouds; Len + I staying at Bunting's Guest House. Wrote H.+Mimi, + Alice + Louis, Big Golf weekend here - today a holiday (?). Russ Webster at club, so could not have dinner with us. 15 TUESDAY 258-107 Dinner at home of Inspector Frank Hoeter (O.I.C. Police) Born American (Pago-Pago - Samoa). Good naturalist. Shell collector. 12 years in T.N.G. Has a comfortable home on hill, spent a most pleasant evening. Will leave large rat trap with him (Hava-heart live trap). Promised us some fried beetles. Swarmed last week + a few out now - usually about 4:30 to dusk. Native women stash them in their hair! Adults = Mona; Larvae Urafe spent day organizing supplies for Kainantu Rain last night. P.T.Ly. cloudy 16 WEDNESDAY 259-106 Goroka - Temp. in 70's. Dinner at Russ Webster's. Sister Bedilia Mulcahy + Jerry O'Callahan in for evening. Frank Hoeter sent over some roasted beetles - excellent. Swarm in Sept. after first Good rain. Shipped specimens to LAE. Packed Rover + trailer. ACTING A.D.C. Here is Mick Foley (while D.C.
