Saturday March 9. Went up on the ridge between the Grovetree and Dacon Creek. A good sized bunch of elk were on this ridge, and a very few on the north side. We then crossed this bunch in the angle between Bacon and Fish Creeks and looked over all the south exposed slopes but found no elk. Then saw a gap on the hillsides west of Fish Creek. In the afternoon we went up to Lafferty's, Amusing foursized elk horns seen on the hillsides and the Grovetree. W.D. Lafferty tells me that 3 or 4 hundred have been feeding in his meadow. Calley said that there are a few on the north side of the Grovetree further up. I met a Mr. [illegible] last winter.
