March 23. Near Elk E Half (Elk) first came thay hu in 1876. Thinks they used to be about 50,000 in Jackson Vale. Thinks this are fewer than formerly, on account of death of the calves. Thinks the calves must helped by a winter range must be set aside. Has fed elk for 2 winters. Had them to buy. Few county of they in 1903 spent between 4 and 5 dollars on the rates no cows. Many of the calves were died then winters about his place. Found 2 dead deer but does not Know cause of death. Never knew any deer to starve. Has known them to be killed by both dogs and coyotes. 17 wintered this winter in buttes near his place. If fed in one place, all the elk in county will congregated there. Thinks the people long on the Game Preserve do not have more than 200 head of cattle and horses.
