62 Thursday Aug. 18 To near Head of Chapa-atun Made a good start and followed up the Trail which kept on the same side of the creek. After about 3 mile we thought best to cross it and crossed the creek and kept up a tributary which came in from the south as the trail through still good. Led too Far westerly. We followed game Trails some of which had been used by Indians as there was an occasional Beggs or cutting we camped at 5 oclock in the valley, a few hundred feet below timberline, on an easterly tributary of the creek followed in the afternoon. Saw one caribou in the valley and about 16 in the nearby mountains. Marmots in Snowpiles. Shortly before sunset they left the river and commenced feeding. Many Tracks of moose and caribou in the valley. Saw signs of wood rat on cleft. In an alfalfa patch before Camp. 63 Miscellaneous Notes Dan Brown tells me that ruffed Grouse are common on the Lower Stewart for 125 miles At Circle city and to Fort Hanlem. They are common along the Kuskokwim. They are common and between the Heads of the Ken. Kokwim and the Kantishna and along the Tanana at least 304 miles up Magpies over in the head of the.
