56 12 miles Friday Aug 12. Up Spaticeza Valley We cached some of our flour and many articles and left our camp at 10.15. Picked our way out of the thick woods to the plain and soon reached its valley broad and comparatively level with many grassy terraces perfectly level and hummocky plateaus. Saw many tracks of moose and caribou and the bed of a bear near our Camp. Traveled until about 5 o'clock and camped near the southern edge of the valley. Started a cow caribou and calf as we camped. Shot 3 mall flamingos and stunned them. Saw many antlers in bog in valley. Many Harry moor and ground bogsomes. Saw stirred body of grizzly bear, but strike was ruined. In the evening saw a small flock (?) Canada geese. Dan tells me that they feed on the lower part of this river where there are sandbars and also in Stikine 57 14 miles Saturday Aug 13 To Night q. Camp Henry Stikine We left camp about 10 and traveled up the N. bank of the Spaticeza for about 6 miles, and then ascended a tributary which came in from the W. and followed it for about 8 miles To the point where its stream came out of the Mts into the main valley a short distance beyond as the height of land. Stikine waters After dinner we went up the Wt side a short distance. George shot a porcupine and a cat fox. Set some traps. Many ptarmigan seen today
