52 Monday Aug 8. To Klappan Flats The morning was rainy and we did not get away very early. We ascended the rally to its head directly south (true) and went through a low Pass. Hence we wound down an abrupt descent following a small stream which flowed into a larger one, a tributary of the main Klappan. We ascended this for some miles and encamped at the lower end of a broad alpine meadow - Klappan flats. We saw many marmot and ground squirrels and also several broods of yellow ptarmigan. After reaching camp, Sam and I went out on the meadows and shot some ptarmigan. A camp of Indians (Carrer Klestas Camp) will be supplied with meat and other necessities, was met with Taws. 130 miles from Gudgy. about 18 mile 53 Tuesday Aug 9. Klappan Flats We left camp about noon, leaving Sam with Larry and Bert, George Dan and I starting for Fort Endlame. We took a dim trail eastward and followed up the small stream and then struck on going eastward. Camped the side of the meadow like rally and camped shortly after 11 in a brush flat among large scattered spruces. Saw two broods of yellow ptarmigan and what a golden crowned sparrow, among the spruces, old and young and common.
