June 19. Made a good start and soon passed the Sun Lance Rapids running it close to the left bank by a high cut bank. A short distance below here we saw a bear on the shore and running the canoe ashore successfully stalled and killed it—a small female. Skinned it for a specimen and took the meat and skin contained on Mr had expected to reach Fort Good Hope but delay cd by the bear and by wind we could not reach that and triumphed late above Rampart at Sempish Creek. June 20. Left our camp at Blue Fish creek at a fairly early hour and soon passed. The Rampart Rapids running close to the right bank. Our accident of the high water there was only a slight gurgling of the current though on the other side of the river the roar showed that there was some very rough water. Immediately below here we entered the Ramparts. While the river runs for 7 miles between perpendicular walls of lime stone several hundred feet in height. On the face of the cliffs were abundant Cliff Swallows bending their nests. We got it.
