It rained a little during the
afternoon but we had the
baggage carried and thought
it best to keep on. Camped
on the left bank of the river.
with prospects of more rain
Sept 3. Left camp early and
continued on our way. It was
Cloudy during the forenoon
and it rained slightly but
cleared about noon and shot
by afterward we arrived at
the Rock Portage where our
tracking ended. I made this
Portage and two others a short
e distance above and camped
just before dark at the last
which the Indians called the
Half Reed Portage, since the
River makes a semi-circle.
Shot a red squirrel and set out
a good line of Traps. A short2nce above the Rock Portage
I saw Five tress (Abies) which
this forest of this kind seen
so far. Since leaving York
Factory the Spruce and
Lamarakes have been gradually
increasing in size until now
Triss a foot and a half in diam
eter are quite common.
Sept 4. Took about 10 mice
in our traps. Eortrump Peronyous
Left camp early and continued
on up the river, which is an
almost continuous succession
of rapids. Made 10 Portage🄭uring the day though at some
of them the boat was not carried
but was hauled up the rapid
by the rope. Passed Brown
Well about noon. Camped
at dark at a portage and
set a good line of Traps.
Sept 5. Jack Eortrump (both color
phases) Heronotus, Sorex, and
go away from camp early as
usual. Made only 3 portage
but polled and paddled up
a great number of rapids
and only made a few miles
Shot a mink near the outlet
