Cynomys ludovicianus
December 22, 1955 Nr. Fb. Collins, Gla.
but some acrotal pigment; no sperm in cauda epid.; testes
abdominal. Large fat 07. || Talked with G.E. Kleppel of A.R.S.
He loaned me data on vegetation of pasture & sycloerus in sec.
22. He said that in sycloerus forage improves for a few
years, then may go back. Bgrs may grow, then die back
in late summer. Bgrs greens earlier than Bda 20 days
early. Not increase with even mod. or light use, de-
creases & Bda increases heavy use. Bda increased on
range between 1946-48 and 1952-53. In heavy use
pasture held own, in mod. use, lost about 25%, with
light use lost about 33%. Bgrs had 25% loss
with no use & moderate use, 35% loss with heavy
use. || Stipa & Carex may grow up very early if they
grew previous fall. Any greens up early, purplish
shoots, as early as March 15, sometimes a month later.
Cut low buy dogs, so harms growth (also eats only in
season before Bgrs. One yr. Bgrs not grow much until
Sept. Rain distribution generally more important
than grazing in vegetational effect, if grazing was
not heavy. Asm seed more important than in Bda-
Bgrs. Bda usually starts first in hard ground.
Bgrs starts fast when cactus comes, Asm may be
alive but not show above ground, & able to grow.
Mully Toneyi stays about same regardless of grazing;
not utilized by cattle; short-lived. || Sect. 22 has
moderate use, about 42 head/section average in CPER;
but about 50 head/AK in SW quarter, but use out-
