Koford 15 Journal January 29,1955. Nr. Ft. Collins, Larimer Gy, Colo. mean Prince. Returned to Ft. Collins. Half overcast + moderate wind. About 40° F. max temp. I saw at least 3 eagles, 2 Buteo lagopus, 1 Cirrus ludovicus in CPER area. January 30,1955 Spent most of day near Cyprange colony near town with line tape out. Saw up to 14 Cypranges at one but trapped none. 5/10 to all overcast, calm, temp. to about 45°F. (est.). January 31,1955. Departed Ft. Collins 8 a.m. with Vieta Schaffer (Fish & Wildlife Service) and Ralph Kell (USFS Denver). Drove via Cheyenne, Torrington, Lusk, Hot Springs, to Wind Cave Natural Parks. Talked this with Sept. Carl Semingern about mammal problems. Drove on to Custer & spent night there. On road from Cheyenne to Lusk we saw about 4 dead Buteo ( ferrugineus ?), 1 Mephitis, 50+ Lynx. Overcast but not freezing. Little snow on ground at Wind Cave Ph. Semingern told us that elk herds had been reduced to 81, buffalos to 350?, last year. Some fences had been re- moved so animals can wander about. Near road behind Cave Park mostly rolling prairie bordered by short yellow poles. Feb. 1, 1955, Nr. Custer, S. Dakota Interviewed George Barnes, trapper, concerning Cypranges. Spent afternoon with a U.S.F.S. group touring Black Hills. They have a beam problem as many beavers, which destroy aspen (sage paper birch & pine). Many beams topped out by Game & Fish Dept. men, but apparently not enough to keep dam damage. Another
