Koford 7 Journal December 23, 1954 To Rocky Mtn. Nat'l Park, Colo. Clear sunny day. Drove 50+ mi. to R.M. Nat'Park to visit James Cole, regional naturalist. He loaned to me re- ports & maps concerning C.L. towns at Wind Cave & other areas under N.P.D. control. Much ice in Big Thompson River. At foot of Hidden Valley the birds fed shrikes, grey jays, and Clarke nutcrackers, all of which fairly tame. December 28, 1954 Nr. Ft. Collins, Colorado. With Mr. E. C. Klipple of the Agricultural Research Service, USDA, visited the Central Plains Experimental Range. Saw the jackrabbit (Klipple says both black & white-tail- ed present), rattlesnake, a dead golden eagle (probably shot), and 1-25 bison (bogopin probably). Only about 1" snow here though about 6" in Ft. Collins (due Dec. 26+27). The station in gently rolling country. Some striples in pastures but mostly grama-buffalo grass. Various degrees use as various pastures for 15 yrs. 60-90 head/section considered heavy stocking (overgrazing), 20-30 head considered light. Klipple had worked here, on & off, for 20 years. Now he was in charge of the range. A small house suitable for stays here was available. Weather data kept too. A favorable site for wildlife studies. Returned to Ft. Collins. The experimental range was 37 miles from Colo. A+M Collye - 3 1/2 mi. E. & 9 mi. N. of Nunn (wheat farming town). Range about 4 X 6 miles max. dimensions. Klipple showed me small Cynomya solay in section 22.
