Nr. Fb. Gillin’s, Colo.
At about 3:30 p.m. I again visited the Spring Canyon
Dam colony. The snow was now much more melted than
3 days ago & large patches ground bare. Many
more prairie dog tracks than then. C10 had no
tracks near it, but C13 and 13 others were
connected by tracks. There 14 burrows north of
fence and within an area of 90 X 50 yards. Some
continuous tracks between burrows went fairly
straight for 50 yards or more. At least 10 sets
tracks connecting some burrows. Obviously many
that had had no tracks Dec. 30 now had them. 16
new construction noted. C10, that had tracks Dec. 30,
now had none. Wind apparently demolished tracks
(including mine) of Dec. 30. Some tracks in groups
of 4 saws—showing jumping locomotion, about 18"
jumper (tip to tip). Some tracks out + back to
same burrow, to 10 yds. out. No tracks connecting
this western group with the eastern group. In that
gp. only C7, H8, had tracks last time, but now
C4 had 10+ sets tracks, M5 & M6 also had tracks,
tracks to old crater near M5, 4 second sets tracks to—
ward M3. M3 (1 track last time) had fresh scratching
out of mud at mouth burrow. No new well-formed
construction. At C1 about 5 sets tracks; C2, 10 sets.
Last 2 days fairly warm (40°F.) & sunny and mounds
entirely clear of snow. One digging about 4" into soil
was seen (western gp.). None seen out (to 4:20 p.m.).
