Dear Doctor: The American Board of Ophthalmology will hold an examination at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, 218 Second Ave., New York City, Friday, October 7th, at 8:00 A.M. Kindly register promptly at 8:00 A.M. with the Registrar. Your examination will cover the following subjects: External Diseases -Slit Lamp Ophthalmoscopy Histology and Pathology Anatomy and Embryology Refraction-Retinoscopy Muscles-Motility Perimetry General Diseases-Neurology Therapeutics - Operations Practical Surgery Optics and Visual Physiology The examination will occupy the entire day and unfinished subjects may require completion in Washington on Saturday or Sunday. Please bring with you any small instruments such as ophthalmoscope, retinoscope or loupe that you habitually use. The examination in ophthalmic surgery will consist of an oral quiz and surgery on animal eyes. Kindly bring with you instruments necessary for a combined capsulotomy extraction. In Refraction candidates will be required to show a thorough understanding of the technique of the fogging method, of the use of astigmatic dials in measuring astigmatism, and of the cross-cylinder tests for strength and axis of astigmatism. A set of microscopic slides illustrating phases of ophthalmic histology and pathology can be obtained through this office upon deposit of $25.00 which will be refunded upon return of the slides in good condition. For 1939, the Board announces an examination in St. Louis in the Spring at the time of the meeting of the American Medical Association, and also at the place of the meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Oto-Laryngology, usually in October. Kindly fill in attached card and mail to me at once regardless of previous arrangement or correspondence. It is necessary that the Board know immediately the number of candidates who will appear at this examination.
