PHOTOFLASH OF SQUID GIANT AXONS
Dr. H. Burr Steinbach
Department of Zoology, Washington University
Because of their size the giant axons of the squid
have proven very favorable material for electrical and chem-
ical studies. It has also been possible to gain some infor-
mation about the localization of certain enzyme systems. Ear-
lier work will be reviewed and some electron microscope stu-
dies discussed. In the axoplasm small particulate units have
been observed which apparently align themselves under certain
conditions to form microfibrils.
