Red-tailed Tropicbird
McKean Island
17 Oct. At 1730 a fully feathered nestling (nest as yet unmarked) was observed outside the nest cavity (under a boulder) about 4 ft and flapping vigorously. There was a session B about 1 1/2 minute, then a session B about 20 seconds. There was no doubt that the bird was just strengthening its wings, relying for takeoff probably in a few days. When I approached, it ascended briskly into the nest cavity.
19 Oct. One LFY (female) at NW corner (unmarked, unmarked nest). One LFY for Enders B islands (sub, sub).
25 Oct. A few nests are still being found — 2 fled two on SW point, one with large feathered gory (705-00719) and one small young gory (705-00724). The 25g mm notes to carry my large juveniles. I note that a few B. by range feathered gory from marked nests have gone. Apparently when they reach this stage, the flapping practice which I noted is a preliminary to departure. I saw one flying around 40 miles as they must have the vicinity, possibly on the first flight and bred out to sea.
29 Five birds deploying at 1518, one B then a marked nestling bird.
