Seawards #13 - Species account
Fairy Term
Laysan
Appears to be far fewer birds on
the island than last fall. I have
not as yet noted any eggs (15 June)
but numbers about camp especially
are less at present than last fall.
Larger numbers have been reported
on the S beach. Ca 100 eggs + chicks
Crests to 1000 birds.

Seawards #13 - Species accounts
Laysan teal
Laysan (Anser)
Secretive. Very few are noted during
the daylight hours, but are readily
seen at dusk when, (I presume) the
bulk of the population congregates along
the central lagoon shore line. These are
consistently noted feeding on the very
abundant "sand flies" present at the
shoreline. On the evening (late afternoon)
of the 13 June a concentrated effort
was made by the entire 7-man survey
party to census the teal. A total of
2097 were counted along the central
lagoon shore. 87 were in the majority.
This may indicate that either 87 are
more abundant in the population or that
87 are incubating or keeping to the
tree vegetation with their broods.
Three broods of 2 each were seen
along the lagoon shore. These were all
about equal age (in 1-6, according to
F & WS aging).
Individuals (again mainly 87) are
noted at night in odd places such
as among the Soft Term plants etc.
These may be in transit from the central
lagoon and the sea shore, as scattered
individuals and/or small groups
are noted each morning very
early at the shore edge at either or
the W side of island.
