C99 Carol J. James Devil's Hole, Ash Meadows, Nye Co., Nevada 10 June 1967 1000 - 1545 DST Carol James & Charles W. Doy OK Initial Observations: 7 Picture Weather - clear Wind - gentle General condition: Entire upper shelf bottom and rocks covered with green algae. Small portion of SW corner (where water depth is shallowest) is covered with floating algae. A light Scum covers the entire water surface. Activity - At 1015, fair number of fish on shelf, ~75 individuals, decreasing with time. Males in breeding colors, some breeding activity, and small fish to 5mm present on the upper shelf. No territoriality observed - some schooling of fish. Individuals seem almost fearless but when sufficiently frightened swim over the shelf ledge and to the lower levels. Other - Planaria very abundant - especially around floating algae. Four day's Phoebe's were observed. One pair of which evidently have a nest above the hole and frequent the water area. Saromalus & Uta stansburiana observed. Honey bees (a swarm about 1500 hrs.) frequenting mud at water's edge.
