This 217 individuals represents all live fish captured
and counted. An additional 31 were preserved making
a total of 248 we have recorded. (See following page.)
In addition to these, many fish were lost from
or eaten while in the capture-traps. The outstanding
majority of those captured were young. However,
afte one day in two capture-traps, an original
population of 60 including both young and adults
had dwindled to 29 (incl. 1 dead female) - adult only.
This means that we can accurately add 31
individuals to our total count and suggests that
young were eaten in the traps. In addition to
this accurate addition, we estimated that between
2110 and 2315 hrs. on 30 June in excess of 200
fish were captured and placed in two new capture-
traps. At 0225 to 0400 1 July an additional
known 137 fish were added to one of those
two capture-traps. At 0700-1000 that day counts
from these two capture-traps resulted in 152
individuals. Therefore, more than 185 individual
were lost out of these traps. This 185 (minimum)
can be added to the population estimate and
since the preponderance of young originally put
into these traps was not sustained, this further
suggests predation of adults or young.
Total number of live individuals counted 248
Total number known lost (preserved) 31
Estimated number lost (minimum) 185
Minimum Estimated Population 464
