30 June and 1 July 1967
Attempted Removal and Count of Entire Population
of Cyprinodon diabolis. C.L. Hubbs, R.R. Milla,
J.E. Deacon, [illegible] J.James, Don Johnson, Elena Arnold.
Initial Observations:
Weather - clear. Gentle wind.
Algae quite abundant on shelf and floating algae
present at edge of shelf.
30 June 1967
1:30 A.M. Dr. Deacon and I arrived at Devil's
Hole and set fish traps (see map)
8 traps (1/4" wire mesh - no bait used)
(4) set on upper shelf
3 sinkers (~2ft. in depth)
1 floater (water only ~1.5' deep)
(3) sinkers set on lower shelf at
~21', 24', & 27' depths.
(1) floater set on the side of Devil's
Hole near a small outcropping (see map)
near the corner of the upper shelf near trap [illegible].
Observations at that time (1:30 - 2:30 A.M.):
C. diabolis very numerous on shelf. Counted
fish on the large rock at the NE corner of
the upper shelf, near upper shelf trap [illegible]. In different areas
on the rock, we counted 20, 11, & 16 fish
within an 8" diameter. All of these fish
