Initial Observations:
Weather - Sky completely overcast & dark clouds.
Storms in nearby mountains (dry lake bed
nearly flooding from runoff, only). Very slight
drizzle, intermittent. Little or no wind.
General Condition - Scum abundant - over entire
shelf and shifting.
NOTE: In order to see & count the fish, I
(splashed)
threw water over the surface of the shelf - done
as a little disturbance as possible & causing
the water to fall much as rain would.
This quickly dispersed the scum - causing most
of it to fall into the water, & rest eventually
on the shelf. This could explain both the
variation in amount of scum seen on
various trips & recorded by others (JED),
which could be due to rain activity which
has been very frequent this summer,
(e.g. during the evenings) and for the
murky appearance of the water, during rain.
Algae - over entire shelf and very heavy "Epil" on
sloping rock at NE portion of shelf except
for grey areas frequented by fish.
Activity - Approx. 200-250 fish on the shelf when
we arrived. Some feeding. Juvenile &
several very young seen.
