matter exposed over much of the NE portion
of the shelf. Some chasing observed but no
territoriality or spawning. Fish activity on
shelf considerably less than on other previous visits
at this time (sun setting earlier now - the reason?)
Water level at ~1800hwl = 2.0
Collection:
Umbrella seine and some dipnetting used.
Picture set-up used to measure most of fish
(see C55 67-8).
Hand measuring of 49 individuals.
Collection of 40♀ + 2♂ + [illegible] + other dying
unintentionally.
Seine placed as soon as possible (~1816) so
that it extended about 2/3 onto the sloping rock
and down into the deep NW shelf area. Left
for approx 1/2-2/3 of an hour. Good "catch"
considering somewhat sparse shelf population. We
placed the captured fish in styrofoam coolers
and replaced the umbrella seine onto the shelf. Second
"catch" taken about 3/4 hr. later - about 1/3 of the
original catch. Total individuals - ~200-250.
Included in this number are ~10 young and juveniles
that I dipnetted from the more shallow Southern
portion of the shelf during this time. The umbrella
seine has not been very effective in capturing
fish of this size, whether because of the seine
itself or because of its placement in deeper waters
(remember, however, it is also placed on the shallow
NE sloping rock).
