It started to run under some Ephedra
californica, but ran into the mouth of a
Crotalus cerastes that was lying on the
sand surface beneath the plant. The sidewinder
dropped the lizard & began rattling at us. The
lizard crawled about a foot away before it
stopped. We picked it up then,
