R.Clapp - 1964
Nov. 10 At Sea and Jaluit Atoll
Population Estimates for Kabbenbock Island
Species Wiwlocki est. Huber est.
Fairy Tern 10 4
Black-naped Tern 7 5
Crested Tern 3 2
Reef Heron 6 4
Whimbrel 1 1
Wandering Tattler 5 16-18
Golden Plover 13 6
Ruddy Turnstone 40 35
Common Noddy 4 8
Hawaiian Noddy 20-25 2
Huber states that his estimates are based
on counts. The discrepancy in Hawaiian Noddy
indicates someone's error. Since No Hawaiian
Noddy were seen on the adjacent island, Erybor,
by Amerman, Lehner, and myself, I would tend
to favor the lower figure.
Huber and Wislocki collected a dark phase
Reef Heron and a Crested Tern. Huber also
notes that there were chickens being kept by
the single native family inhabiting the island.
The only other "real " discrepancy in the
above estimates are the two figures on Wandering
Tattler. I have no way of knowing which might
be the more accurate.
Wislocki notes that pigs were being kept on
this island also. A small species of lizard
(not the large form noted on Erybor) was seen
and apparently was the "Blue-tailed Skink",(the
form with the dark dorsal striping.) No nests
were seen by either Wislocki or Huber.
