R.Clapp - 1964
Nov. 17, 1964 - Kuria Atoll
12 shots. (5 Common Noddy, 4 Hawaiian Noddy, and
3 Fairy Tern) Huber and Binion aided by Ken,
collected the prize of the day, however, a large
pigeon, which I think is Ducula pacifica. This
bird has a short bill and a high protruberance
on the cere. It has 14 tail feathers.
They saw another pigeon and Binion winged it
but it was not obtained.
Larry mentioned seeing one Reef Heron.
As I joined them on the way back to the raft
we heard one or more Sooty Terns flying over but
were unable to spot them. At this time it was
about dusk.
While we were sitting on the raft, surrounded
by umpteen bushel of children, they brought
us a"frog" which proved to be a Bufo toad which
I go not know but which Larry felt was different
from that form found on Palmyra Island.
The natives are very friendly but Larry
turned down the offer.
Saw several dragonflies on the island. There
are areas in which there are very deep pits
(taro pits ???)
