S. Journal and notes of Hannibal Hamlin, July 20, 1927 to November 7, 1928.
(He took leave of Drs. Chapman and Murphy July 20,1927, crossed Canada to Vancouver,
and joined Richards July 26 (see R). He describes in detail their visit to
Honolulu (Aug. 3), sighting "Mary" (Canton) Island (Aug.7), visit to Suva (Aug.11),
Auckland (Aug.14-15), Sydney (Aug. 19). Thence via S.S. Mataram (Aug.31), arriving
Tulagi (Sept.6). He gives an amusing account of "tracking down" the France,which they
finally reached on October 11, 1927 (S 41-). Gives list of native names of birds
(S 54-); a detailed account of Bougainville Island (S 131-), and what was collected
at different altitudes from shore to 5,500 feet (S 136-). Hamlin, assisted by Hicks and
David, collected on Buka and Bougainville Islands.)

(In addition to chronological notes, he tells of difficulties seeking permission at
Samari to collect protected birds, there being a rumor that the expedition was
"finished." He went to Port Moresby, December 5 to 9, 1928, to visit the Government
Secretary's office for a hunting permit, and to get shoes. The S.S. Mortinda was wrecked,
but the permit was received in mail off the wrecked ship. He returned to Samari,
December 16, on the Veimarri, the France to follow. Visited Sawa Bay, Normanby I., Salamo,
Ferguson I.; the France to pick him up at Baniara about January 28, 1929. The
American Museum was informed that Hamlin wanted to be relieved for the "summer", as he
was hampered by government restrictions and the condition of the France's engines. He
hoped conditions would be better after May (T 41). He gives notes on expenses,
sickness - Teora in hospital with two bad legs. The France sailed for the Luisiade
archipelago February 11 (T 43); through the Conflict group (Feb.12); he describes the
"rugged islets" off Comorant Entrance. Anchored in the lee of Abagagaheia I.(Luisade);
they landed Feb.14. Repairs were made to the France at Samarai, March 11 (T 57-). The
party worked into the interior toward Diabu (T.58-), Milne Bay area, April 7 until
the France was back in the water. Departed April 26 on trip to Luissades, returning to
Port Moresby June 27, 1929. Returned to Samarai July 3, where they were joined by Dr.
Ernst Mayr, of the Berlin Museum. At Faisi, July 14, they found an infantile paralysis
epidemic in the group and the area under quarantine. To Kietä harbor for oil, and
collected in the Buin area (south end of Bougainville I.) July 20. Hamlin and Mayr
bicycled to Father Poncelet's (8 miles). More engine trouble. Coultas and Eyerdam
arrived on S.S. Marsina and disembarked at Kieta, August 29,1929 (T 89). Gives
notes on Phalangers. Says: "Seven collectors working on Choiseul Island (Mayr,
Coultas, Eyerdam, David, Charlie, Teora, and Hamlin." (T.100-) Hamlin traveled down
cost with a Chinaman, Oct.3 (T.108). France under command of Captain Cruickshank (T.116).
Three men (Mayr, Coultas, Eyerdam) sent to San Cristoval, Nov. 21?, on government
