American Museum of Natural History WHITNEY EXPEDITION JOURNALS AND RECORDS, 1920 to 1935 The following is a chronological summary of and guide to the manuscript journals and records of a series of field studies made across the South Pacific ocean from French Polynesia to New Guinea, 1920 to 1935, sponsored by the American Museum of Natural History, New York City, and known as the Whitney Expedition. These records are contained in 25 uniformly bound volumes in the Library of the Department of Birds, American Museum of Natural History, each identified by a letter of the alphabet, as follows:- A. Charles W. Richmond, General notes on South Pacific island groups, Volume 1. This manuscript was prepared for the guidance of expedition personnel, and a bound copy of it and "B" accompanied the expedition. It contains notes on previous expeditions and collectors who had visited these islands; an alphabetical list of place names; and notes concerning the species of birds reported from each group, and their type localities. The first volume (A) covers the following groups: Society (A 1-33), Tuamotu (A 34-72), Marquesas (A 73-86), Line (A 87-99), Caroline atoll, (A 100-113), Cook group (A 114-124), Rapa Island and vicinity (A 125-141), Samoa (A 142-168), and islands north of Samoa (A 169-171). B. Volume 2 of the same, covers: Fiji (B 1-100), Rotuma (101-105), Horne Islands (106-108), New Caledonia (109-135), New Hebrides (136-175), Banks Islands (176-183), Santa Cruz Islands (182-189), chief collectors in the last three groups (190-192), Tokelau Islands (193-196), Uvea (Wallis Island) (197-199), general index to volumes 1 and 2 (A and B) (201-282). (Note: These two volumes (A and B) have value to anyone interested in the geography and natural history, particularly the species of birds, of the groups covered.) C. Letters from Rollo H. Beck, Field representative of the American Museum from May 12, 1920 to July 4, 1923, together with copies of letters to Mr. Beck from Dr. Chapman. (This volume contains chiefly administrative data, including letters from and concerning Ernest H. Quayle; there are no chronological journal records.) D. Letters and journals of Rollo H. Beck, 1923 to 1928. (The first portion consists chiefly of letters and records of an administrative nature, interspersed with information regarding places visited, chiefly in American and Western Samoa, and a trip made by Mr. Beck to New Zealand. A letter written in Suva, October 1, 1925 (D 61 and following), summarizes relations with Mr. and Mrs. José Correia, who finally left the expedition November 30, 1926. Pages D 308 ff. describe relationships on the France leading up to Beck's resignation. E. Extracts from the Journal of Rollo H. Beck, Volume 1, September 1920 to June 1923.
