11 Aug. 2 Dead bats (which Art let me pickle),
one live bat (which should have been
put up tonite + will probably be dead by
tomorrow), + 4 dead birds. What a
waste. Dr. Wei, the ornithologist, took
the birds, and tonite I saw them lying
out on the window sill of identifications.
But what will he do of them? Nothing
probably. Wei has the most potential,
is the most independent, but seems so
handicapped by the system. How hard
would it be to learn how to pickle birds?
We got back in time for dinner, one I
could have done easily up, + I asked
Art about setting the Sherman's tonite.
None of his undergrads has any real
motivation and I could feel the negative
messages from around the table as I
even raised the subject. Art was to
the point of steaming about the plane
ticket as again Wu had made no
headway on the problem all day. Art
looked around + taking his cue from
people's faces said we'd just set them
in the morning. As I left driver Graham
offered to go up me if I wanted to
