rein, B.R. 1988 2 Aug. ca. 2 km. outside Mengling, Institute of Ecology, Academia Sinica Field Station, Mengling, Yunnan Prov., PRC. Drove south from Kunming 700-712 km., turned east on 1st major/only turnoff. Continued ca. 65 km. to field station. Arrived about 7:00pm. About 9:00pm split into 3 groups - one set 3 lg. live traps for carnivores, one set up a mist net, and ours set out 2 lines of Victor's + museum specials. Used p.b. but expect little as ants will get it unless we have more substantial bait. Drive in was continual up+down over the mountains This is obviously rainforest but the extent of cultivation is enormous (and impressive in view of the human power used to terrace the hillsides). Brief intermittent rain showers along the way. Wait be able to assess vegetation in the immed. Vicinity of the station until morning. Actually flew from Kunming to Sgmao + drove from Sgmao to station. However, km. markers are from Kunming. Flight was prop. plane flying ~5,000' alt.; took 1ΒΌ hrs. Sgmao is the southernmost airport in China. 3 Aug. Up at 7:15 am. to check traps. Because China has no time zones it is still dark. We must be ca. 2 hr. west of Beijing in terms of the sun. Went to see where Art had set up bat nets. Must have had 6 Rousettus - but he is letting them go! He checked them once, about
