About 300m downhill along the road to Gaomiao, from the parking lot at the gate to Emei Mountain Park. 3:00-5:00 pm. elevation 1300 m. 29°35'N 103°17'E 30.6°N, 102.7°E Sichuan Prov. The salamander only occur near the headwater of longdong R.. Very cold water comes out of underground. All 8 salamander were discovered under rocks. When turn over the rocks, the salamanders normally move very slowly. According to Li Xuetao (my local field guide) the salamander deposit eggs under rocks, which locate in the fast moving stream, not static water. During night, the salamanders were often found on smooth tree trunk on the east bank of the river. JF 008-005 died on May 16, 1999, No tissues were collected. See back for a map. This is the location has the lowest elevation of all Batrachuperus. Possibly because the underground water is really cold.
