JOURNAL
Lower Nye Campground, 3300 ft., Lomi N+2½ mi. W Crockett Pk.,
Lake Co., Calif.
Returned to the camper ca. 12:00, waited for Susan + Ned to
finish their birds, and had lunch ca. 12:30. After lunch
we moved on to a new location:
Lomi, N+2 mi. W Crockett Pk., Lake Co., Calif.
Habitat - good sized Ponderosa + Sugar pines, Douglas fir, Black
oak woodlands - patches of chaparral w/ lots of manzanita
and scrub oak. We got here about 1400 and Ned prepared
the 2 birds I had collected for him while Susan + I split
up + went collecting, she for Wrentits, me primarily for
Mountain Chickadee. I collected a Solitary Vireo soon after leaving
the camper (I walked south along the road) but found little
of interest thereafter, it being the middle of the afternoon.
I turned back about 1600 since the Vireo was getting old + I
needed to take tissues. On the way back I saw a Mt. Chickadee
and shot at it but missed. (see spp. account). After I had
prepared the Vireo, I went out again and found more chickadees,
2 of which I collected (see spp. account). I then returned to
the camper ca. 1730 and made a skin of one of them, while
Susan (who had gotten lost early in the afternoon but found
her way back by 1800) made a complete skeleton of the other
(DAG 46). The time now is 2000 and we have not yet had
dinner. Weather today cool + clear + still in morning, hot +
clear later. A breeze came up as well.
