Aug. 1 west side Colorado R, 500 ft., 6 mi. N Calif. line, Clark Co., Nev.
mouse traps. I put out 58 traps & caught:
Perognathus formosus 15♀ 15♂ 2?
Dipodomys merriami 7♀ 3♂
We are camped in riparian growth.
The dominant plants are Salix, Screwbean,
Catalou. There is a fairly heavy growth
of a 2-4' woody annual & some grass.
Out on the dessert to the W of camp,
Creosote Bush is the dominant plant.

Last night G. Bartholomew and I drove
to this locality to set out traps. On the
way I shot 1 Dipodomys merriami & 1 Por Will.
As I was setting out my traps I set one
down on a Rattlesnake - we were both
surprised. He retreated into a Creosote
Bush rattling his rattle furiously. I
watched him (within the) for 35 min. Not once
did he cease his rattling. At times he
would slow down but when I moved
he stared furiously again. Leaving my trap
pack I went back to camp & got a shotgun,
flashlight & Bartholomew. I pulled him
into sight with the shotgun & shot him
in the neck with .22 shot shell. Then I
set out the rest of my 100 traps. I set my
