J.Rodgers-1939
Itinerary etc
April 8
Lathrop, San Joaquin Co., Hospital Canyon, San
Joaquin Co., Mt Diablo, San Contra Costa Co.
After bacon and eggs cooked over a can
of burning alcohol I went into Lathrop.
I hoped to find skinks like MVZ 3559,
labeled H. C. Bryant 552, collected
by him June 14, 1911 at Lathrop, Calif.
I talked to half a dozen boys who
could remember having seen
Sceloporus and whiptails but no
lizards resembling my description
of the skink. I searched the district
thoroughly for places to look for
skinks but could find nothing
to turn over but lumber piles in town.
I turned several of them over but
found only Sceloporus and Bufo
(see catalog no. 1926-1948). The
boys said that the nearest rocky
country was Hospital Canyon about
11 or 12 mi. S. of Tracy so I went there
about 10:00 am. There I collected one
skink but not like the one Bryant
got in 1911. I drove back to Mt Diablo
and got another skink (no. 1948) in
the same place I got one yesterday, the
latched under many other rocks within 1 mi.
of this. Arrived at L.S.B (MVZ.) Berkeley 4:45 pm.
