June 12, 1938
hunted reptiles while Dave Johnson looked
for bat caves. We found and collected
Diposaurus and Sauromalus there.
After hunting there for an hour or so, we
turned west and continued nearly to
Granite mountains. There we turned north
and camped on the highest point where
road passes over the pass between the
Granite and the Providence mountains.
The next morning, we hunted there; at
12:40 we left for Amboy. We had
supper at Mojave, and camped that
night (night of June 11) on the west side
of Shacklepi Pass, just below the
loop in the railroad. This morning,
after an hour's hunting there we drove
home. The melting snows in the
Sierra Nevada had raised the water
the San Joaquin River so high
that the road up the valley was
blocked somewhere southeast of Tracy.
We had to turn west through Loo Bans,
and from there north to Tracy. Where
we crossed the San Joaquin River near
Loo Bans, the water was within two
or four inches of flooding the pavement. We
arrived in Berkeley about 6:30 the evening.
