J. Rodgers Mitchell's Caverns, 4500 ft., Providence Mts., San Bernardino Co., Calif. June 9, 1938 Tunnel, looking for a place to be out of the wind. In one of the caves, we found a bat and finally got it by knocking it down with a hat. Johnson put it up. There was strong smell of exploded dynamite in one cave and several boxes of unexploded dynamite in the other. We chose the latter as sleeping quarters June 10, 1938 This morning I walked up the canyon, back of the house, to the tunnel, then south up onto the ridge, down (southeast) into the desert, and north along the foot of the hills, back to Mitchell's. I got a big Crotalina mitchellii about 200 yards up the canyon from the house. The sky has been clear today and the temperature between 80° and 83°. The wind has come up this afternoon, and is blowing hard now, 43 d. Dave just returned from a hike up on the ridge, and has a complete mountain sheep skeleton. June Mrs. Furt. Zool., Univ. Calif., Berkeley Alameda Co., Calif. June 12, 1938 After lunch on June 10, we packed up and left Mitchell's Caverns. We traveled to a place 8 1/2 miles NW Essex where there are some rocky ridges.
