Cedar Canyon, 5000 ft., Providence Mts.,
San Bernardino Co., Calif.
June 1, 1938
Dr. Grinnell, after having car trouble from 5:30
to 11:45, had lunch and left for Berkeley. Since
Elmer Aldrich had several day's work to do in
Berkeley, and has to leave for his Ranger Naturalist
job at Crater Lake on June 11, he went back with
Dr. Grinnell. Yesterday and last night, and
this morning until about 11:0'clock the sky was
heavily clouded over. It cleared up by noon
and has been warmer than the last three or 4
days. The following is a report on the lizard
trap (see notes May 25) up to date. I set it on May
24, put fresh meal worms on it the morning of
the 25th and that day, caught 1 Cnemidophorus,
I put more fresh bait on it the next morning,
and on that day, caught one Vta 2. The next
day, though the bait was alive and wriggling,
I didn't catch anything. The next day (25th) I moved
the trap down the wash about 100 yards, put fresh bait
on it and caught 1 Lelepsone magister. On the
29th, the bait still wriggling, I caught 1 Cnemidophorus.
On the 30th, the bait dead, I caught 1 Eunicea. On
the 31st, the bait dried up, I caught another
Cnemidophorus. June 1, I caught nothing,
and moved the trap into Cedar Canyon proper,
just west of the mouth of this wash. I set it
under a Cate Claw near a large rock and the
rocky hillside. The other sets were undisturbed.
