Clarke says that there are also quail and
grouse in the country. He says that usually
grouse can be heard drumming at this
time of the year.
Mrs. Winchester said that she used to see
salamanders a foot long in the stream
about 1/2 mile west of the ranch house.
I presume they were Diapontodon, but I
was too tired of climbing that hill to
go look for them.
We arrived at the ranch home at about 11 o'clock.
I paid Mrs. Winchester $5.00 for the use of her horse.
Mr. Clarke couldn't be persuaded to take
any money. Carl and I spent an hour
collecting salamanders and at noon,
had lunch with Mr. Clarke. About
12:40 we left for Berkeley and arrived
there about 8:30.
