J.Rodgers 103 Frank Clarke Ranch, 7 mi.SW Laytonville, Mendocino Co., Calif. Mar. 31, 1938 Carl Koford and I arrived here at about 11:15 A.M. We have drive exactly 8.1 miles since leaving Laytonville. We met Mr. Frank Clarke and his hand Joe, and learned that the bears are about one mile down the hill from here, and that one of them weighs around 300 lbs; the other is smaller. Mr. Clarke said that it would certainly be more than we can do to this afternoon, and said that we should have lunch with him, work on the bears in the afternoon, he back for supper at 7, stay over night at his house, and, in the morning, his dughter would be over from her ranch 3 miles away — and with her horse and his lame horse, we could get the bears up the hill. We agreed to the plan, and after looking for salamanders and reptiles that might be found under boards, we had lunch. Mr. Clarke's daughter Virginia prepared the lunch for me. Virginia is one of Clarke's 6 children (5 girls and 1 boy). She has just graduated from high school, and is now "taking her turn" at keeping house at the ranch. After lunch, Joe and Carl and I went down the hill to work on the bears.
