White-crowned Sparrow on the campus

Sept.30,1938 Berkeley, Alameda Co., Calif.
The last four mornings I have walked
from Vine St. to the Campus between
4:45 and 5:30 am. During the walk, I have
heard almost constant notes being
uttered overhead. From two to seven or eight
times during each walk (15 min.) I
heard shore birds, some of which I
recognized as Killdeer; the others, I
could not identify. The notes uttered
most constantly (1- every 15 to 30 feet)
as I walked along) were those of
some land bird. Yesterday I heard
White-crowned sparrows making notes
that I believe were the same. I believe the
notes made by the heard overhead were all
made by the same kind of bird. I cannot say
how long these birds have been migrating
over, since I heard them the first morning
that I was out early enough.
