24 June Mexico: Chihuahua
oakls are present on some of the hill areas
and a few small juniper noted.
25 June Mixtaca lies in a broad river valley, the
river bordered by large willows and cottonwoods.
Adjacent low-lying hills are barren and are
apparently largely used for corn growing. Bottom
land is essentially all under cultivation.
Barren hills produced 1 H. drobia and several
Cnemidophorus in several hours of hunting.
The main creek produced Thamnophilis aqua,
T. rufipunctatus, Bufo woodhousei, Rana
pipiens, eggs and larvae of ranido, Rhinosternum
26 June Left Mixtaca and drove over good dirt roads to near
Tenechic (=Tomochic on World Aeronautical Chart)
about 30 miles S of Mixtaca. Turned around at
this point to return to Chihuahua. Objective was
to find some of original pine-oak forest. Hills
covered with sparse, scrappy stand of pine-oak
with most of pine removed. All reserve reasonably.
Level ground was currently barren and used for crops.
Ploughing was in progress as a prelude to rainy
season. On passing through La Junta on return
we met Arthur Flechsig party on way in to
collect fish for Weedham. On suggestion
of his we collected Scaphiopus larvae short
distance E of La Junta. Camped for night
just W of Pedernales. Here in river bottom
