4 Oct. Calif: Contra Costa Co.
Stream reduced to pools with essentially
no flow but surface water continuous
throughout study area. Larvae still
under rocks & quiet water pools and
always close to water's edge. Only place
where common was in well shaded,
very shallow (1 inch) water with mat
of bay leaves in which larvae were
hiding.
At Lafayette 1200-1230 hrs. No Triturus
although water on down face calm and
clear. Large numbers of frogs (catesbeiana)
perched on floating water weeds close to
shore. Water level now raised above
normal with result that no damp
soil areas for metamorphosed Triturus
to emerge onto.
